The Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) is an annual collegiate competition that challenges student teams to develop a scale-model steel bridge. The team must determine how to fabricate their bridge and then plan for an efficient assembly under timed construction at the competition. Bridges are then load tested and weighed, and they are also judged on aesthetics.
North Carolina State University will host the regional competition for the Carolinas Region on Saturday, April 2, 2022 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The competition will feature teams from North Carolina State University and Clemson University.
Spectators are invited and encouraged to attend!
All competition participants must complete a Waiver of Liability. The waivers should be completed and uploaded to the “Carolinas - Student Steel Bridge Competition” folder on ASCE’s Cerberus site by March 18, 2022.
Note that this waiver is independent of the waiver for the ASCE Student Symposium at the University of South Carolina. If you are attending and participating in both weekends, you will need to complete and upload both waivers.
This SSBC Regional Competition is being held on a separate weekend from other events that are part of the Carolinas ASCE Student Symposium at the University of South Carolina on April 7-9, 2022. Please be mindful of the SSBC eligibility requirements that are outlined in Section 4 of the SSBC Rules.
In order for you to be eligible for an invitation for the SSBC National Finals, your team must be in good standing with ASCE. This includes your ASCE Student Chapter’s good faith participation in the Student Conference Business Meeting and the Student Symposium Paper competition. Both of these events will occur at the University of South Carolina during the rest of the Symposium. Please plan accordingly.
Visit the Carolinas ASCE Student Symposium website for more information about these events and the schedule.

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) are the organizing sponsors of the Student Steel Bridge Competition (SBBC). Outstanding performance in Regional Competitions, and only participation in those competitions, qualifies eligible teams for the Student Steel Bridge Competition National Finals, which is organized by AISC in collaboration with ASCE.
